Artist’s details :
– Baptiste Caccia : “Canicules” (“Heatwave”) :
This first institutional exhibition by Baptiste Caccia brings together some fifty works created since 2018, several of which were created especially for the occasion. Spread over two floors of the Château, it offers a broad overview of his practice.
Born in Angers in 1988 and a graduate of the Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2013, Baptiste Caccia draws on a vast repertoire of images from both the private and public spheres: family photographs, snapshots, reused old works, images gleaned from the Internet or generated by artificial intelligence. This heterogeneous material feeds into all of his work.
Combining painting and screen printing, his canvases are constructed through superimposition, erasure and covering. Like a palimpsest—an ancient manuscript in which a deleted text gives way to a new inscription—each painting retains visible traces of previous images. His works question the visual persistence of images and the mental projections that shape our memory and perception of our environment. Through this approach, Baptiste Caccia explores the mechanisms of the gaze: the images that settle there, jostle there, resist there. It is not a question of narrating, but of revealing the silent contaminations between images, and what they say, despite themselves, about the saturated and discontinuous visual flow of our era, where the intimate and the collective merge in a chaos devoid of hierarchy.
– Nadia Ayari, Molly Greene, Rose Lowder, Isa Melsheimer, Emma Reyes et Jacqueline Sotta : “Je suis verticale mais…” (“I am standing up right but…”):
‘I am vertical, but I would like to be horizontal’ — these are the opening words of a poem by Sylvia Plath, in which the author imagines herself gliding among flowers and trees, expressing a deep desire to blend into nature.
Taking its title from this poem, the exhibition brings together six artists from different generations and backgrounds: Nadia Ayari, Molly Greene, Rose Lowder, Isa Melsheimer, Emma Reyes and Jacqueline Sotta.
Archaic plant forms, flamboyant flowers, cellular patterns evoking fictional plants… Through gestures imbued with ecological thinking and off-centre perspectives, these artists seek to rethink our relationship with living things. Driven by this dream of horizontality, they plant the seed of another world — a world without hierarchy, where sharing and curiosity reign supreme. Nature is respected, while species coexist harmoniously.
A tribute to earthly poetry, the exhibition unfolds like a silent manifesto: it reveals the invisible and pays homage to a world that is disappearing.
– Gilbert Garcin : “La vie devant soi” (‘The life before us”) :
Originally from La Ciotat, Gilbert Garcin (1929-2020) had a long career running a lighting company before dedicating himself to photography in the early 1990s. This retrospective offers an immersion into a visual universe imbued with humor, fiction, and dreams, where Mister G, the artist’s fictional alter ego, takes center stage. In his poetic and surreal compositions, Gilbert Garcin explores the great questions of human existence with both depth and simplicity.
