Village of Saint-Maurice-d'Ibie
Information
Description
The village features numerous narrow streets that are delightful to wander through. Houses equipped with a “couradou”—a covered terrace with arches—bear witness to a past centered on sericulture (silkworm farming) and artisanal silk spinning. A 12th-century church, classified as a Historic Monument, can be visited upon request at the town hall. The only local businesses are a bar-restaurant and a vendor selling fruits, vegetables, juices, and jams—all locally produced.
A few kilometers away lies the hamlet of Les Salèlles, which is part of the commune of Saint-Maurice-d’Ibie. Although several vaulted passageways were destroyed during the construction of the road toward Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, the hamlet still boasts beautiful vaulted houses with external staircases, as well as two bread ovens (one communal and one private). A short distance from the hamlet, tall cypress trees mark the location of several private Protestant family cemeteries. An inn-restaurant offers visitors the chance to enjoy “bistronomic” cuisine.
The Ibie River, which flows through the village, is dry for most of the year; however, it can experience significant flooding during the *épisodes cévenols*—intense weather events that frequently occur in the autumn—often causing the river to overflow its banks.
A realm of limestone, the Ibie Valley is planted with vineyards and lavender fields. Those who enjoy swimming often head a few kilometers from the village to the “Trou de la Lune” (Moon’s Hole), a pool formed by the weir of the former Noé mill. This basin of crystal-clear water, filtered by river pebbles, serves as the only swimming spot near the village.
